ELDT Not Showing in the TPR? Why, and How to Fix It
Short answer: you don't put your ELDT in the Training Provider Registry (TPR); your training provider does. FMCSA gives them until midnight of the second business day after you finish (49 CFR 380.717). If it has been longer than that, check your record at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/Check. If it's missing or wrong, contact your provider first: only they can submit or fix it.
How to check your ELDT record in 3 steps
- Go to the registry's driver check: tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/Check.
- Enter your details exactly as they appear on your license or learner's permit.
- Look for each part of your training. Class A, Class B, Passenger and School Bus need both theory and behind-the-wheel. Hazmat is theory only.
The check is for you, not your DMV. FMCSA tells states they "cannot accept this driver check" and must pull your record from the registry themselves before your test (FMCSA FAQ for state licensing agencies). So a printout won't get you tested, but it tells you whether there's anything to fix before your appointment.
How long does ELDT take to show up in the TPR?
Your provider has until midnight of the second business day after you complete the training. Finish on a Friday, and the deadline is midnight on Tuesday. Many providers file sooner. Your state then asks the registry for your record when you come in for your test, and the registry answers "Yes" or "No" for each type of training.
Why your ELDT isn't showing: 6 common causes
| What happened | What to do |
|---|---|
| It's still inside the two-business-day window. | Wait until the deadline has passed, then check again. |
| A typo in your name, license or permit number, or state. | The registry takes what providers type and doesn't check it against your license. Ask your provider to correct it: FMCSA lets them edit entries "entered incorrectly due to human error". |
| Only part of your training is filed. | For Class A, Class B, Passenger and School Bus, theory and behind-the-wheel are filed separately, and they can come from different providers. Each provider files its own part, so check that both are there. |
| The wrong license class or endorsement was filed. | Ask your provider to correct it. A Hazmat course filed as Class A (or the other way round) won't unlock the test you booked. |
| Your provider was removed from the registry. | Training finished before the removal date still counts; training after it does not, and a removed provider can't file anything (49 CFR 380.723). Read what to do if your provider was removed. |
| More than a year passed between theory and behind-the-wheel. | Except for Hazmat, the theory and behind-the-wheel parts must be completed within one year of finishing the first one (49 CFR 380.603(c)(3)). If that window has passed, ask your state licensing office what you need to retake. |
Can I submit my ELDT to the TPR myself?
No. FMCSA's registry FAQ is clear that driver-trainees can't submit information to the registry. Only a registered training provider can, and only they can correct what they filed.
Does my ELDT expire once it's on file?
No. FMCSA says a driver's ELDT certification "remains valid indefinitely", with no deadline to take your skills or knowledge test afterwards. The one clock is the one-year window between theory and behind-the-wheel before you finish (it doesn't apply to Hazmat). More detail: does ELDT expire?
Hazmat: when does ELDT have to be on file?
Before your Hazmat knowledge test. FMCSA's rule is that Hazmat ELDT must be completed before the knowledge test, and your state must confirm it before letting you take it. If the test is booked soon, check the registry a few days ahead.
Who to contact
- Your training provider, first. They filed it and they're the only ones who can fix it.
- The FMCSA TPR team, through the registry's contact page, if your provider can't be reached or has been removed.
- Your state licensing office, if the registry shows your training but they still say they can't see it.
