Question 1

Which ELDT course do I need?

Accepted Answer

First-time Class A applicants need CDL A Theory ELDT, and that same course covers a Class B to Class A upgrade. First-time Class B applicants need CDL B Theory ELDT. Drivers adding a Hazmat, Passenger or School Bus endorsement need that endorsement's ELDT. There is no ELDT requirement for the Tanker or Doubles/Triples endorsements.

Question 2

Do I need ELDT if I already have a CDL?

Accepted Answer

If you obtained your CDL before February 7, 2022 you are exempt from ELDT for that licence class. But adding a Hazmat, Passenger or School Bus endorsement for the first time still requires ELDT theory, regardless of when you got your CDL.

Question 3

Do I need ELDT for a tanker endorsement?

Accepted Answer

No. The federal ELDT rule covers Class A, Class B, the Class B to A upgrade, and the Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus endorsements only. Tanker and Doubles/Triples are knowledge-test only. If a provider is trying to sell you tanker ELDT, you do not need it.

Question 4

How much does each ELDT course cost?

Accepted Answer

Every DLA Academy ELDT course is $20. Bundles save $5 to $10 — for example Hazmat ELDT plus test prep at $30, the 3-Endorsement bundle at $50, or School Bus Complete at $50.
