How Much Does a Hazmat Endorsement Cost in 2026?
Every fee, who you pay it to, and the one most guides leave out — the licence issuance fee that pushes some states well past the usual range.
Budget roughly $112–$150 for training, the TSA background check and your state’s endorsement fee. Some states add a licence issuance fee on top — often $40 to $65 — which takes the real total higher. Texas, for example, comes to about $177. Only one of these costs is variable: the training. Ours is $20.

Cost 1 — Hazmat ELDT: $20
Since February 7, 2022, federal law requires every CDL driver adding a hazmat endorsement for the first time to complete ELDT theory training from a registered provider. Mandatory — you can’t skip it.
What you can control is which provider you use. The curriculum is set by FMCSA and identical at every registered provider, so the price gap is overhead, not content.

Cost 2 — TSA Background Check: $87–$100
The hazmat endorsement requires a federal background check called a Security Threat Assessment, conducted by TSA. It applies to every applicant regardless of experience, and it can’t be waived.
Most states enroll through IdentoGO, TSA’s authorised provider; a few, including Florida, use their own driver licence offices. The fee typically runs $87–$100 depending on where you enroll, and covers:
- The fingerprinting appointment
- The federal background check review by TSA
- Processing and notification of the result
This check takes 4–8 weeks — the longest step in the whole process and the one most drivers underestimate. Book it the same day you finish ELDT so both run together. One exception: agent states such as Texas issue the enrollment code only after you apply in person, so you can’t book first there.
Cost 3 — State Test & Endorsement Fee: $5–$30
After passing the hazmat knowledge test, you pay your state to add the H endorsement to your CDL. This is set by each state and varies widely. Your state page has the current figure and what it includes:

Does My Employer Pay for It?
Many carriers, fleets and districts pay for ELDT when they require the endorsement as a condition of employment. If yours is requiring hazmat, ask upfront — at $20 it’s an easy expense for them to approve.
The TSA fee is usually paid by the driver, though some employers reimburse it. The state fee almost always is.
