ELDT vs. the DMV Knowledge Tests

These are two different requirements, and confusing them costs drivers time. ELDT is the federal training requirement — that's the two courses in this bundle, and they're reported to the FMCSA registry. The knowledge tests are separate state exams you take to get your commercial learner's permit. That's what the Permit Prep is for.

Planning to Add Endorsements?

This bundle covers your license class. Endorsements — Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus — each require their own ELDT for first-time applicants. Hazmat in particular pays off: hazmat-endorsed drivers earn more per load, and it also requires a TSA background check that takes 4–8 weeks, so starting early matters.

What's the difference between CDL A and CDL B ELDT?
CDL A ELDT covers the FMCSA curriculum for combination vehicles — coupling and uncoupling, trailer handling, and combination-vehicle inspection — required for first-time Class A applicants. CDL B ELDT covers heavy straight vehicles like box trucks, dump trucks, and buses, required for first-time Class B applicants. Both are online and auto-submitted to the FMCSA registry.
Does the Permit Prep replace ELDT?
No. Permit Prep helps you pass the DMV knowledge tests for your Commercial Learner's Permit — it is not submitted to the FMCSA registry and does not fulfill the ELDT requirement. The two ELDT courses in this bundle fulfill the federal requirement; the permit prep helps you pass the state exams. Both are included.
Which DMV knowledge tests does the Permit Prep cover?
All three Class A permit tests — General Knowledge (50 questions), Air Brakes (25), and Combination Vehicles (20). Each requires 80% to pass. Class B applicants take General Knowledge and Air Brakes only, so the Combination section is there for when you upgrade.
Are both ELDT courses submitted to the FMCSA TPR?
Yes — as two separate entries, each within 24 hours of finishing that course. You can verify your status anytime at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov, and your state licensing agency checks the same registry.
What is the Same-Day TPR Submission upgrade?
Standard submission is within 24 hours of completion. The Same-Day upgrade — a $15 add-on at checkout — submits your completion the same business day you finish. Useful when a DMV appointment or employer deadline is close.
Do I need behind-the-wheel training too?
Yes. ELDT theory covers the online portion required before your skills test. Behind-the-wheel training must be completed separately with a local FMCSA-registered BTW provider. Both are required for first-time Class A and Class B applicants. You can search registered BTW providers at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.
Do I need ELDT for Tanker or Doubles/Triples?
No. The federal ELDT rule covers Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and the Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus endorsements only. Tanker and Doubles/Triples are knowledge-test only — no course required, nothing reported to the registry. For tanker you just need to pass the 20-question test: Tanker Test Prep is $15.
Is this accepted at my state DMV?
Yes. Both ELDT courses are FMCSA-approved and accepted in 49 states. Your state verifies completion directly through the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Washington State is not served. Find your state's process at our state pages.
