How to Get a Hazmat Endorsement on Your North Carolina CDL

North Carolina follows the standard federal process for adding a Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement to your CDL:

  1. Complete Hazmat ELDT Online — $20 DLA Academy's FMCSA-approved course. Your completion is automatically reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry so NCDMV can verify before your test.
  2. Apply at Your Local NCDMV Driver License Office Visit any North Carolina DMV driver license office. Bring your CDL, proof of identity, proof of NC residency, and DOT medical card. You must be at least 21 years old to obtain a HazMat endorsement in North Carolina.
  3. Complete TSA Fingerprinting and Background Check North Carolina requires a TSA Security Threat Assessment for all HazMat endorsement applicants. Fingerprinting is done at a TSA enrollment center. Allow 2–6 weeks for TSA processing.
  4. Pass the HazMat Knowledge Test at NCDMV 30 questions, 80% passing score required (24 out of 30). Covers federal hazmat regulations, placarding, shipping papers, classification, and emergency response. Administered at any NCDMV driver license office statewide.
  5. Receive Your H Endorsement Once TSA clears your background and you pass the knowledge test, your updated North Carolina CDL with the H endorsement is issued. Your new CDL will arrive within 20 business days — you'll receive a Temporary Driving Certificate to use in the meantime.
💡 Pro Tip: Start your TSA background check at the same time you complete ELDT. TSA processing takes 2–6 weeks — running both simultaneously gets your endorsement faster.
